One Day

One day your eyes will open wide
To find your mom and me.
You’ll look around the world outside
At all the beauty you can see.

One day you will understand
The many words we say to you.
You’ll smile when we say your name,
And start to make your own words, too!

One day I’ll give you a big bear hug.
I’ll squeeze and say, “I love you.”
You’ll hug me back and then reply,
“Dad, I love you too!”

One day you’ll stand on your own
As each foot goes in front of the other.
You’ll start to jump and climb and run,
And get back up after falling over.

One day you’ll learn to ride a bike
Faster than you thought you could.
You’ll feel the wind upon your face,
And laugh like only a child would.

One day you’ll play on a team.
You’ll score a point and we will cheer
Louder than all of the crowd,
“That’s my son!” you’ll hear.

One day we’ll go to the shore.
You’ll try to swim above the waves.
We’ll make a castle out of sand,
And you will love those summer days.

One day you’ll hike up a mountain.
You’ll climb to see an awesome view.
Standing stunned by all God has done,
And I’ll be there to enjoy it, too.

One day you’ll learn to drive a car,
To feel the freedom behind the wheel.
You’ll fill the tank and go so far,
And still come home for the family meal.

One day you’ll wear a cap and gown.
Your mind filled with wants and dreams.
We’ll still be there, cheering you on,
The proudest parents ever seen.

One day these days will come and go.
They still seem so far away.
So we will cherish these moments now,
We’ve only had you for one day.
