Thomas Westerman Obituary

Thomas G. Westerman passed away on Friday, September 16, 2022, unexpectedly in Nevada County, California. He was born in Denville, New Jersey, growing up in Cedar Lake’s loving community. Thomas graduated from the Morris County Vocational School of Technology in 2009.

He was a loving young man who cared deeply for those around him. Generous, enigmatic, and joyful are just a few words to describe him. His smile was contagious, and he gave hugs that made you melt. He was always quick with wit, ready with one-liners—he enjoyed making others laugh and laughing with them. He never had much, but he was selfless when helping those in need. One of his friends commented that “Tom was the kind of guy who would take the shirt off his own back, even if it was the only one he owned.” Thomas liked to believe in the best in people and was willing to give others a second chance. Perhaps because he knew he needed a second chance for himself.

His unfortunate passing has left us with deep sorrow. In life, we held on to the hope that he would turn his life around and come home. And now we cling to the promise of a hope found only in Jesus Christ. Though our hearts are heavy and mourn the loss, we choose to celebrate his freedom in the arms of a compassionate God.

Thomas is survived by his father and mother, David and Edith Westerman, sister Elizabeth Westerman, and brothers Peter (Cassandra) Westerman and Andrew (Isabelle) Westerman.

We will be holding a memorial service to honor Thomas’ life on Sunday, October 23, at 2:00pm in the Family Worship Center of Grace Church on the Mount Randolph Campus (previously Bethlehem Church). Refreshments to follow. All are welcome to attend. Instead of flowers, we ask that you donate to:

Sammie’s Friends Animal Shelter is a local shelter that took in Jeff, Tom’s dog (pictured below). At the time of this writing, Jeff is being fostered by a loving family who plans to adopt him soon.

  1. He was such a lovable guy. Just as you so eloquently described him, Peter. Tender hearted, guileless, fun. I hate that he is gone. Life hurts so bad sometimes. I think it speaks well of him, for who he really was, to see how much others loved him-for his kind, gentle, humble and loving nature. He counted. He was real. He made a difference in all of us, didn’t he? Bye for now, Thomas

  3. My prayers are with you all. I did not know Thomas although I know some of the rest of the family.
It’s never the way we expect it to be when parents outlive a child, and it’s impossible for anyone not in that situation to begin to fathom what that might be like. While no one can begin to understand how any of you feel, I just want you to know that you are, and have been since I first heard, in my heart and in my prayers.
