“And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell bound into the burning fiery furnace. Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished and rose up in haste. He declared to his counselors, “Did we not cast three men bound into the fire?” They answered and said to the king, “True, O king.” He answered and said, “But I see four men unbound, walking in the midst of the fire, and they are not hurt; and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods.””
Daniel 3:23-25 ESV
What does it feel like to be burned alive? Not that anyone should seriously consider this question, but have you ever imagined what it would feel like to be completely surrounded by fire? Perhaps you’ve seen a graphic movie that depicted such a scene. Fire is a devastating power of nature that consumes and destroys. One of the first lessons a young child learns (often the hard way) is to not touch the hot stove. If you’re looking for a first-hand account of what it feels like to be drowning in flames, I encourage you to ask Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego on the other side of heaven. However, they may not have the answer you would be looking for. These men didn’t feel an ounce of pain (you might be better off asking the guards from verse 22, but I doubt you’d ever get such an opportunity). They were so sold out for God that they had the faith to fight back the furnace. God protected them and even appeared alongside them.
Now that’s an experience I would want to have! This world is filled with challenges that take the form of flames licking at our spiritual integrity. Satan is actively attempting to distract us from focusing on following God’s will. It is our job to be bold and let God reveal himself through us to the world. Are you ready to start making an impact? Will you be on fire for God?
